Listed below are some of the common issues with Teeth Whitening
Tooth Sensitivity
During the first 24 – 48 hours following the whitening procedure, many patients experience sensitivity. This sensitivity is usually mild and may come and go in waves. This being said, if your teeth are normally extra sensitive than you may have moderate post-whitening sensitivity. With in-office whitening, this sensitivity will usually subside within 1-2 days.
With take-home whitening, quite uncommon due to the low concentration and strength of the whitening gel. However, if you still do feel sensitivity, it may be necessary to reduce the number of hours you wear the tray to resolve the sensitivity.
Gum Irritation
A common issue with teeth whitening is gum irritation. With in-chair whitening, a small amount of the gel may seep under the gum protection and lead to minor inflammation or irritation of the gums. This usually subsides within a few days and has no long term effects.
With take home whitening, irritation can be caused from excessive use of the gel and trays. If this occurs, you may need to reduce the number of hours of use or stop completely for a short period of time to let the gums heal. It is also possible that the whitening tray is overextending and rubbing against your gums. If this occurs visit our clinic and we will be able to trim the tray to better fit your teeth and gums.

Damaging fillings and crowns
We always recommend that all fillings should be done before whitening is completed. Open cavities can allow the ingress of whitening gel into the nerve of the tooth and cause pain.
Although in-office teeth whitening will not directly damage your dental fillings and dental crowns, it will not change the color of fillings as it does on your natural teeth. This can lead to whiter teeth making darker fillings look more obvious.
